Brace Myself

It was June 2012 when Mom and I went to the TMJ Specialist with my TMJ x-ray and he felt my jaw popping, and I’m not exaggerating when I say he was alarmed by how bad it was. 😦 I need to undergo to a major operation but that would cost a lot of peso and we can’t afford it, also I’m afraid to any surgical thingy! But God is so good! The specialist recommended me the other way that we can do for my jaw, by wearing braces. Yes braces! Yung bakal sa ngipin! I didn’t expect to ever wear braces in my entire life!

I was in high school then when I noticed that every time I open my jaw more than an inch wide, it makes a very loud popping sound. It’s very painful, annoying and it causes migraines. I think it’s one of the reasons why I’ve always been very temperamental. The TMJ Specialist said that my mandible gets dislocated when I stretch it too wide or even when I’m sleeping on my side. I also have an overbite teeth that cause of the dislocation of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket.

It’s called Temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMJD), problems that affect the joint between the lower jaw and the base of the skull. One of the top causes for TMJD is bruxism which I’ve always had. Ako rin yung taong paghumalakhak kita ung buong gilagid at kung humikab wagas. HAHAHAHAHA!

August 19, 2012 when Mom and I went to a dentist, (see! I can’t really manage myself alone but now I’m trying. Haha!) ready for my braces appointment. Dr. Esvin (my dentist) put brackets on my upper teeth while he gave me a mouth splint to be worn every night while sleeping to relieve the pain (because it stops my teeth from grinding).

This photo is from the internet but mine was specially molded, too.

I was so shocked because I asked Dr. Esvin how long I’d need to wear the braces for and he said 2 years lang. LANG?! at depende pa daw yan sa damage! Olala!

See this is what happens when you have TMJ disorder. I hope you’re reading up to this part because this is a very common disorder and people often don’t think much of it but do you see that disc that gets displaced? That can deteriorate and your jaw can lock completely. Scary, right? Augggh.

This! Wearing those metals and rubbers! LOL.

If you have symptoms like mine or cases like this don’t let your TMJ impair and drain you. Pray and have faith because God will heal you. Visit TMJ Specialist to recommend and advice you what you should do.
